A 23-year-old pregnant woman was successfully treated for acute small bowel volvulus caused by congenital malrotation of the gut at KMCH after she was admitted to the emergency care unit with severe abdominal pain and continuous vomiting.
The woman had previously sought treatment at other hospitals without relief. Emergency evaluation at KMCH revealed the rare and potentially life-threatening condition, which, if not treated immediately, could endanger both the mother and the unborn child.
A multidisciplinary medical team comprising specialists from Obstetrics, General and Gastrointestinal Surgery, Anesthesiology, Neonatology and Intensive Care Units performed emergency surgery. During the procedure, the intestinal twist was corrected and blood flow to the intestines was fully restored, avoiding the removal of a large portion of the small intestine.
Subsequently, keeping the safety of both mother and child in mind, a Caesarean Section was successfully performed. Both the mother and newborn recovered well after the surgery and were discharged home in good health.
The multidisciplinary team consisted of Dr. Vishnu Thulasiraman, General and Laparoscopic Surgeon; Dr. Priya Pari, Gynecologist; Dr. Srinivasan, Neonatal Specialist; and Dr. Dinesh, Anesthetist.

Dr. Arun Palanswami also congratulated the doctors and nurses, stating that the swift and coordinated action of specialists from different departments helped ensure the safe recovery of both the mother and child.
