READ extends ₹9.13 lakh livelihood support for tribals

READ, a non-governmental organisation, has extended livelihood support worth ₹9.13 lakh to tribal families and farmers living in Hasanur and adjoining hill villages in the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve landscape.
The assistance was distributed at a programme held at the READ office in Hasanur. READ director Karuppusamy presided over the programme, while project officer Sivaraj welcomed the gathering.
Financial assistance was provided to 11 tribal beneficiaries to purchase milch cows and to 13 beneficiaries to purchase goats. Eight tribal farmers were also provided with oil engines for agricultural purposes. The total value of the assistance was ₹9,13,500.
The initiative was aimed at creating additional income opportunities for tribal families through livestock rearing and strengthening their household economies, Mr. Karuppusamy said.
The oil engines would help farmers undertake irrigation and other agricultural operations more easily, reduce difficulties in farm activities and improve agricultural productivity, he added.
The programme was part of READ’s continuing efforts to support education, healthcare and livelihood development among tribal communities in the Hasanur region.
