Five people were killed when a car returning from a wedding plunged into the Sharda Canal near Paras Purwa village on the Dhakherwa–Girjapuri highway in Lakhimpur Kheri district late last night.
Six people from Bahraich district had travelled to Lakhimpur Kheri to attend a relative’s wedding. While returning home, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing the car to overturn into the canal.
Five passengers died on the spot. The injured driver was rescued by police and admitted to a nearby hospital.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation. Preliminary findings suggest the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
