The forest areas along the Western Ghats in Coimbatore district are home to a large number of wild elephants. It is a common occurrence for these elephants to leave the forest areas and enter villages in search of food and water.
In this situation, a single male wild elephant, known as ‘Rolex’ by the locals, has been continuously entering villages and damaging crops in the Thondamuthur and Naraseepuram areas.
Following requests from local residents and farmers to anesthetize the elephant and take it into a dense forest area, the Coimbatore District Forest Department sent a report to higher authorities regarding the relocation of the ‘Rolex’ wild elephant.
Following the permission of the higher authorities, the forest department is engaged in the work of capturing the elephant. After the Rolex elephant left the forest area a few days ago, Anamalai Tiger Reserve Forest Veterinarian Vijayaraghavan and retired forest veterinarian Manoharan tried to capture the elephant by administering an anesthetic injection. Despite the anesthetic injection, the elephant escaped from there and went into the forest area. Following this, the forest department has been engaged in the task of monitoring the elephant day and night to administer an anesthetic injection to the elephant.
Doctor Vijayaraghavan then tried to administer an anesthetic to the elephant. Then, the elephant suddenly attacked Doctor Vijayaraghavan, seriously injuring him.
Following this, three elephants, Kapildev, Narasimhan and Muthu were brought from Topslip of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve to monitor and capture Rolex. Of these, two elephants, Narasimhan and Muthu, were sent back to Topslip on Oct 10th because they were religious. Instead, a Kumki elephant named Chinnathambi was brought from there to Kamban village and the task of capturing the wild elephant Rolex continued.
In this situation, this morning, forest department veterinarians anesthetized the Rolex elephant and captured it. With the help of Kumki elephants, the forest department has loaded it into a vehicle and is going to leave it in the forest area to carry out monitoring work.
The Rolex wild elephant, which had been on the loose for several days, has now been captured, bringing relief to the farmers and the public in the area.
