Roof of Newly Built School Collapses in Trichy; Engineers Suspended

shock prevailed after the roof cement plaster of a newly built classroom at the Panchayat Union Primary School, Singalanthapuram, near Thuraiyur in Trichy district collapsed within a year of its inauguration by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.

The building, constructed last year with ₹30.50 lakhs under the Child-Friendly School Infrastructure Development Project of the Rural Development and Panchayat Department, was opened through video conferencing by the Chief Minister. The school has 34 students studying in two classrooms, with the new block also containing two rooms.

On Monday morning, students returning from the weekend found cement plaster fallen from the ceiling of the new classroom, sparking alarm among parents.

Musiri District Primary Education Officer Kanagaraj and Rural Development Agency engineers inspected the site. Trichy District Principal Education Officer Krishnapriya also held an inquiry with headmaster Rajasekaran.

Trichy District Rural Development Agency Project Director Gangadharini announced that Junior Engineers Periyasamy and Thangarasu have been suspended, while disciplinary action was initiated against Junior Engineer Kalaichelvarajan. Steps are being taken to blacklist the contractor.
