Police arrested a history-sheeter and his associates from a wedding venue in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, in a dramatic operation, even as the bride pleaded with officers to allow the ceremony to be completed.
Akash, alleged leader of a gang known as the “Illegal Gang,” was arrested along with five of his associates.
Police said the gang has been active since 2018 and consists of more than 50 members who reportedly carry the words “Illegal Gang” tattooed on their necks.
According to police, Akash has around 31 criminal cases pending against him, including murder.
He was earlier arrested in connection with the murder of BJP Youth Wing vice-president Surendra Kushwaha on March 18, 2024, and had spent about 18 months in prison.
Police also said that Akash and members of his gang were recently accused of kidnapping a 26-year-old religious preacher and demanding Rs 8 lakh from him.
They allegedly threatened to frame the victim in a sexual assault case if he failed to pay the money. The victim managed to escape and filed a complaint with the police on March 11, following which an investigation was launched.
Acting on the complaint, police traced Akash to a wedding venue where he was about to get married to Seema.
During the arrest, the bride reportedly pleaded with police to allow the ceremony to be completed, saying that the rituals were over and requesting two hours for the wedding to conclude. She also requested that the marriage be allowed to take place at the police station if he could not be released.
However, police refused the request and took Akash and his associates into custody.
They were later produced before a court and remanded to judicial
custody.
