RPF Constable assault video triggers outrage on Chennai

A video showing a Railway Protection Force constable allegedly assaulting a youth at Thiruvottiyur railway station has gone viral on social media, sparking widespread criticism.
The incident reportedly occurred on February 11 after an electric train operating from Chennai Central to Gummidipoondi departed the city. A 22-year-old youth, identified as Tharman of Korukkupet, was said to be travelling in a first-class compartment without a valid ticket and allegedly under the influence of alcohol.
During inspection, the Travelling Ticket Examiner detected the ticketless travel and deboarded the youth to impose a fine. An argument ensued between the two, following which the RPF was alerted.
When an RPF constable attempted to detain him, a scuffle reportedly broke out. In the viral footage, the constable is seen pushing the youth to the ground and pressing his foot on the youth’s neck on the platform at Thiruvottiyur station as commuters watched.
Railway police sources said a case has been registered against Tharman by the RPF at Tondiarpet under relevant provisions, and a fine was imposed for ticketless travel. Further inquiry into the conduct of the RPF personnel is expected.
