Rs 1.2 Crore cash and goods seized within 12 hours of poll code

Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik said cash and goods worth about Rs.1.2 crore were seized within 12 hours of the Model Code of Conduct coming into force in the State.
Addressing reporters in Chennai on Monday, she said 2,106 flying squads had been deployed across Tamil Nadu to monitor violations following the announcement of the Assembly election schedule.
She said nominations for the elections would be received between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Special arrangements have also been made outside polling booths to safely store voters’ mobile phones.
Patnaik said if people carrying cash are able to produce valid documents, the money would be returned immediately.
Officials have been instructed not to cause inconvenience to the public when proper documents are available. At the same time, large cash transactions will be closely monitored.
Election campaigning will be permitted between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.
She added that an important meeting with representatives of all recognised political parties would be held in Chennai at 3 p.m. to discuss election rules, campaign guidelines and expenditure regulations.
