A rumour that crores of rupees had been concealed inside a septic tank at the house of an accused in a Rs.30-crore online investment fraud case triggered a police search near Natham in Dindigul district on Monday.
The alleged fraud came to light in Kasampatti and surrounding areas, where people were reportedly promised that their money would be doubled through an online application. The total amount involved was estimated to be more than Rs.30 crore.
Natham police had registered a case and arrested three alleged agents from Kasampatti — Ramesh, his wife Anita and Vijay. They were subsequently remanded in judicial custody.
Meanwhile, information spread among local residents that crores of rupees had been hidden inside the septic tank at Ramesh’s house. Acting on the information, residents kept watch around the house and alerted the police.
A police team led by Natham Inspector Ponkunasekaran visited the house on Monday morning. With the assistance of local residents, the police broke open the septic tank and carried out a detailed search.
However, the search revealed only stones and sand inside the structure, and no cash was found. Police subsequently found no basis for the claim that money had been hidden in the septic tank, and residents left the spot disappointed.
