Widespread appreciation has been pouring in for a municipal sanitation worker in Thiruvarur who displayed exemplary honesty by handing over a bag containing 20 sovereigns of gold jewellery and silver articles found on the road to the police.
The jewellery belonged to Radhakrishnan, a resident of Kooduvanchery near Chennai, who had arrived in Thiruvarur with his family to attend a function at a relative’s house in Alathampady. Radhakrishnan, whose daughter’s wedding is scheduled to take place on March 8 in Thiruthuraipoondi, had brought the jewellery and silverware purchased for the wedding in a separate bag, intending to keep them at a relative’s house.
While travelling by autorickshaw from Thiruvarur to Alathampady, the bag kept at the rear of the vehicle accidentally fell onto the road, unnoticed by the family.
Durai, a sanitation worker engaged in cleaning work on Virupachi Current Road, noticed the unattended bag and, on opening it, found gold jewellery and silver items inside. He immediately informed municipal officials and handed over the bag to the Thiruvarur Town Police Station.
Around the same time, Radhakrishnan’s family approached the police to lodge a complaint about the missing jewellery. After verification, the police returned the valuables to the family.
The police felicitated Durai for his integrity, while the family expressed emotional gratitude. The incident has drawn praise from the public, highlighting honesty and social responsibility even amid economic hardship.
