Schools to prioritise Physical Education five days a week: Minister Rajmohan

School Education Minister Rajmohan has announced a revised timetable for State Board schools, placing greater emphasis on physical education and digital learning, with students set to have opportunities for physical activities on all five working days.
Releasing the revised timetable on Monday, the Minister said physical education would be compulsory for three days a week for Classes 1 to 10 and two days a week for Classes 11 and 12.
The remaining periods earmarked for extracurricular activities could also be used for physical education, allowing students to engage in physical activities every day.
Rajmohan stressed that physical education classes should not be skipped or neglected and urged schools to encourage students to participate actively in sports.
He also said there should be no discrimination based on caste or religion in sporting activities at schools.
Under the revised schedule, Tamil and English will each have four periods a week, while an additional period will be allotted to Mathematics and Science. Schools will function from 9.30 a.m. to 4.10 p.m.
Each period will be 90 minutes for Classes 1 to 5 and 45 minutes for Classes 6 to 10, according to the revised timetable.
The Minister also said steps would be taken to fill vacant physical education teacher posts.
Teachers who had failed the eligibility test would be given another opportunity, with the government providing training to help them prepare.
The revised schedule aims to give greater importance to students’ physical development alongside academic learning.
