Self-defence training essential for women

All India Karate Do Federation Secretary PR. Ramesh said that self-defence training is essential for all girl children.
He cited the recent gang rape incident in Coimbatore and the sexual assault incident at Anna University.

Generally, training in martial arts can instill courage and physical strength among children, which is why many private schools only teach karate, judo, boxing and taekwondo, he said.
In government schools too, a short-term course is conducted by the education department.
But, such training is only basic, and that too for a few days in a month, which does not help them defend themselves during the crises that often occur in Coimbatore.
On the contrary, the government should instruct all schools to train girls in martial arts on par with the training provided at the NCC. Training should be started for girls from class 6 onwards. At least one hour a week should be allotted for such training till Plus 2.
This will strengthen them physically and morally. Competitions should be held every year at school, district and state levels and prizes should be given.
If girls are given proper training, they can shine in any field.
They have shone globally not only in the Indian cricket team but also in space science. Therefore, the Chief Minister, who is a pioneer in introducing breakfast, innovation girls, free bus travel, etc., should arrange for training in martial arts for women.
This will eventually help women win prizes at the national and international levels. Now, many trainers are in this field.

If this training is made mandatory in all schools and colleges, they will also get job opportunities. At the same time, this training should be included in the sports department and SDAT.
At present, girl students are taught “good touch, bad touch” in schools and guide books are also given. Also, moral classes should be conducted at least once a week from class
6 onwards.
Such classes should cover safety aspects and how to protect oneself from love affairs during school and college days, and how to respect parents and youth. In this connection, a psychiatrist should also be used.
In case of any major crisis, mere learning alone will not help anyone to protect themselves.
He added that only physical training, sports and games will help the youth to protect themselves and
others.
