Senthamangalam MLA Ponnusamy’s death: Assembly adjourned for the day

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly was adjourned for the entire day on Wednesday after members paid homage to the late DMK MLA from Senthamangalam, Ku. Ponnusamy, who passed away due to a heart attack last year.

The House reassembled at 9.30 am for its second day of the current session. As proceedings began, Speaker M. Appavu led the House in expressing condolences over the demise of Ku. Ponnusamy, a sitting legislator who died on October 23.

Condolences were also paid to former members of the House and prominent personalities, including industrialist Arunachalam Vellayan, poet Erode Tamilanban, film producer A.V.M. Saravanan, and former Lok Sabha Speaker Shivraj Patil. Following the obituary references, all members stood in silence for two minutes as a mark of respect. The Speaker then announced that the Assembly would stand adjourned for the rest of the day.

The developments followed a dramatic opening day of the session on Tuesday, when the year’s first sitting of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly began with the Governor’s address. Governor R. N. Ravi left midway, after which the address was read out in Tamil by the Speaker and formally entered into the Assembly records.

The Assembly is scheduled to reconvene on Thursday at 9.30 am, with Question Hour to be taken up first. This will be followed by a debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor’s address, with participation from both ruling and opposition members. Chief Minister M. K. Stalin is expected to reply to the debate on Saturday, after which the session will conclude.
