“Service Before Self” Theme inspires Students at Shiv Nadar University

Shiv Nadar University Chennai hosted a special expert session on Monday aimed at inculcating the core values of the armed forces among student volunteers and strengthening the spirit of selfless service.
The programme, titled “Service Before Self: Military Lessons for the Modern Volunteer – Not Me, But You,” was jointly organised by the National Service Scheme and Youth Red Cross units of the university at the Mini Auditorium on February 2. More than 200 student volunteers actively involved in social service initiatives participated in the session.
Dr. P. Saravanan, Head of the Department of Business Administration at Kathir College of Arts and Science, delivered the keynote address. Drawing on lessons from the military, he spoke on discipline, resilience, integrity, and unwavering commitment to duty, and explained how these values are equally relevant to volunteerism and community service.
He noted that the NSS motto, “Not Me, But You,” closely reflects the ethos of the armed forces, where individual interests are placed secondary to collective welfare. Dr. Saravanan urged students to practise leadership through action and to serve society without seeking recognition or reward.
The session also highlighted the importance of accountability, teamwork, and perseverance in addressing social challenges. An interactive discussion followed, during which students shared their field experiences and sought guidance on applying military-inspired values in their volunteer activities.
