Seven Tamil Nadu fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan navy

In yet another incident that has heightened tension along the maritime border, seven fishermen from Tamil Nadu were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on charges of crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line while fishing.

The fishermen had ventured into the sea from the Mayiladuthurai fishing harbour when they were intercepted near Neduntheevu, also known as Delft Island. The Sri Lankan Navy detained the fishermen and seized two mechanised fishing boats, describing the act as illegal fishing in Sri Lankan waters.

Fishermen’s associations in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have repeatedly complained that such arrests, chases, and seizure of boats by the Sri Lankan Navy have become frequent, severely affecting their livelihood and causing fear among coastal communities.

According to reports, the detained fishermen are being taken to Kankesanthurai Port for further inquiry. Officials said legal procedures are underway as per Sri Lankan regulations.

The latest arrests have once again drawn attention to the long-standing issue faced by Tamil Nadu fishermen who depend on traditional fishing grounds in the Palk Bay region, with demands growing for diplomatic intervention to secure their release and ensure protection of fishermen at sea.
