Special police teams have arrested seven youths in connection with the brutal double murder that took place near Nanguneri in Tirunelveli district.
Police said the incident occurred on Monday night at Perumpathu Bazaar under the Nanguneri police station limits. A gang of nine persons reportedly arrived on motorcycles and attacked people standing near a tea shop with sickles and other weapons before fleeing the spot. In the attack, John Mark (42) of Indira Colony at Perumpathu and a migrant brick kiln worker from a northern state were seriously injured and died on the spot. Several others sustained grievous injuries in the indiscriminate assault.
Those injured in the attack were identified as Nelson (58), Prabhakaran, Ramasamy, Ganesan (53) of Veerankulam and Sasikumar of the same area.
They were admitted to the Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment. Based on a complaint, Nanguneri police registered a case and formed special teams to trace the culprits. During the investigation, seven youths were arrested.
The arrested have been identified as Kannan (21) of Chennimalai, Subbaiah alias Subhash (19), Anthony Michael (18), Kalyani (19), Raja (19) of Nambinagar, Uchimahali (20) of Nedunkulam and Vasantha Kumar (21).
Police said efforts are under way to trace the remaining accused involved in the attack and further investigation is in progress.
