Suburban electric train services between Chennai Beach and Tambaram were disrupted on Thursday following a signal failure, causing inconvenience to hundreds of commuters.
Railway sources said a technical glitch in the signalling system led to multiple suburban trains being halted on the same track at various points along the route.
The disruption affected office-goers and students travelling to schools and colleges during the morning hours.
Efforts were taken by railway staff to rectify the fault and restore normal services at the earliest. Commuters experienced delays as trains were regulated until the issue was addressed.
Meanwhile, railway authorities have announced that due to renovation works at Chennai Egmore Railway Station, changes in suburban electric train operations on the Chennai Beach–Tambaram–Chengalpattu route will come into effect for 45 days from midnight on Thursday until April 5.
Passengers have been advised to check revised schedules and plan their travel accordingly.
