Festive cheer has arrived early at the Amma Unnavagam inside the Coimbatore Corporation office complex, where Diwali sweet sales have begun in full swing. This year’s highlight is the introduction of the special Tirupati Balaji Laddu, freshly prepared using pure milk.
Established in 2013 and managed by a women’s self-help group, Amma Unnavagam has earned a loyal following among Corporation employees and the public alike for its tasty, hygienic, and affordable food. The outlet serves a variety of dishes — herbal soups and kampa koozh in the mornings, vegetarian biryani during lunch hours, and evening snacks like chickpeas and chili fudge.
Speaking about the festive preparations, Sudha, the in-charge of Amma Unnavagam, said, “For Diwali, we prepare and sell a wide range of sweets such as laddu, rava laddu, jalebi, ghee mysore pa, blackcurrant mysore pa, fig mysore pa, badusha, almond cake, cashew cake, kaju katli, and milk sweets. We also make traditional items like pasi paruppu laddu, sesame balls, coconut burfi, and mixtures, priced between ₹360 and ₹900 per kg.”
She added that the newly launched Balaji Laddu is made from poondi prepared with milk, offering a rich and authentic flavor. “All our sweets are made at home without Ajinomoto or baking soda. We use minimal food color and prepare them using premium ghee and oils to ensure quality and taste. No chemicals are used, so our products remain natural and healthy,” she said.
Last year, Amma Unnavagam sold nearly 2,000 kg of sweets and 600 kg of savouries, thanks to the continued support of Corporation councilors, officials, employees, and regular customers.
