Special Lecture on Infant Nutrition at Avinashilingam Institute

As part of the National Nutrition Month (POSHAN MAAH 2025) celebrations, the Department of Food Science and Nutrition at Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women, Coimbatore, in collaboration with the Nutrition Association, Nutrition Society of India – Coimbatore Chapter, and the Dr. Rajammal P. Devadas Chair, organized a special lecture on Monday.

The event, held at the Hi-Tech Seminar Hall, featured Dr. A. S. Roshini, Senior Resident in the Department of Medical Gastroenterology at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital, Coimbatore, who delivered a lecture on “Infant and Young Child Feeding to Prevent Obesity.”

Dr. Roshini emphasized the importance of proper breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices, highlighting key aspects such as the role of colostrum, nutritional components of breast milk, feeding patterns, and the long-term benefits of breastfeeding in preventing lifestyle diseases. She also addressed calorie requirements for infants, the importance of complementary foods, and challenges in special conditions such as HIV and fever. Stressing balanced nutrition in early childhood, she noted its critical role in preventing obesity and metabolic disorders later in life.

Earlier, Dr. C. A. Kalpana welcomed the gathering. Students, faculty members, and members of the Nutrition Society of India – Coimbatore Chapter took part actively in the programme.

The lecture underscored the significance of early nutritional interventions in shaping a healthier future generation and reaffirmed the Institute’s commitment to advancing the objectives of POSHAN MAAH 2025.
