Students who secured admission to private engineering colleges through the sports quota have made their mark in inter-collegiate taekwondo competitions, bringing recognition to Mettupalayam and Coimbatore.
The Anna University Inter-Collegiate Zonal Taekwondo Tournament was held on January 10 at Thottiyam Private Engineering College in Tiruchirappalli. In the competition, Sanjay, a second-year student of Ramakrishna Engineering College, Coimbatore, and a native of Mettupalayam, won first place and set a record.
With this performance, Sanjay has been selected to represent the university at the All India Inter-University Taekwondo Competition to be held in Punjab in March.
Another student from Mettupalayam, Sharapat Roshan, also participated in the same tournament and secured a bronze medal. He is a first-year student at Nehru Engineering College, Coimbatore.
Both students had earlier achieved success in the state-level taekwondo competitions organised by the Tamil Nadu School Education Department. Based on their sporting achievements, they were granted admission to private colleges under the sports reservation quota and are currently pursuing their studies while continuing competitive taekwondo.
Parents, college faculty, coaches and fellow students congratulated the students for their performances in the zonal-level tournament.
