The arrest of 12 fishermen from Karaikal by the Sri Lankan Navy on charges of crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line has triggered concern among the local fishing community.
According to sources, the fishermen were apprehended while allegedly fishing in Sri Lankan waters.
The Sri Lankan Navy seized them and took them by boat to Kankesanthurai port for further inquiry.
Officials said the detained fishermen are currently under investigation by Sri Lankan authorities. The incident has caused shock and anxiety among fishermen in Karaikal, who have expressed concern over repeated arrests in the region.
Fishermen associations have urged authorities to take immediate diplomatic steps to secure the release of those detained and to prevent such incidents in the future.
