On the occasion of the 148th birth anniversary of social reformer Periyar E. V. Ramasamy, DMK president M. K. Stalin and party leaders paid floral tributes at his statue near the Omandurar Government Estate on Anna Salai in Chennai on
Thursday.
Stalin, party treasurer T. R. Baalu and Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin were among those who garlanded the statue and paid their respects.
Stalin later paid floral tributes to a portrait of Periyar kept at the DMK headquarters, Anna Arivalayam. A Social Justice Day pledge-taking programme was subsequently held.
With Stalin leading the pledge, DMK cadre took an oath to follow the principles of equality, social justice, self-respect and fraternity in their lives.
September 17 is observed as Social Justice Day in Tamil Nadu to mark Periyar’s birth anniversary.
