A video showing government school students pushing a stalled government bus in Thiruvarur has gone viral on social media, triggering concern over vehicle maintenance.
The incident occurred when students were returning after visiting the 4th Thiruvarur District Book Festival, which has been under way since February 8 at a private marriage hall in the Pavithramanikam area.
The festival will continue till February 17, drawing participation from government and government-aided schools across the district.
The district administration had arranged government buses to transport students to and from the venue.
However, on February 9, a bus carrying students broke down a short distance from the festival venue in the Pavithramanikam area and came to a halt on the roadside.
With no immediate assistance available, students were seen pushing the bus for a short distance in an attempt to restart it.
The vehicle, however, failed to move and remained parked by the roadside.
Officials said District Collector Mohanachandran, upon being informed of the incident, directed the Transport Department to ensure that buses deployed for the book festival are sent only after thorough mechanical inspection to prevent recurrence.
