Sulphate Gas leak near Chennai Port triggers panic

A sudden gas leak near the Secretariat and Chennai Port area caused concern on Tuesday, with dense white fumes spreading across the locality and affecting residents and commuters.

Several people reported breathing difficulties, while some experienced coughing and vomiting following exposure to the fumes. The incident led to temporary panic in the surrounding areas.

In a statement, Chennai Port authorities said the gas leak originated from a vessel berthed at the port. Due to high temperatures, sulphate-based material aboard the vessel underwent a chemical reaction, resulting in the release of sulphate gas.

The authorities explained that the chemical reaction produced thick white fumes, which spread in the atmosphere. They also noted the presence of nitrogen dioxide and ammonia in the air.

Emergency response teams were immediately deployed, and efforts are under way to contain the leak. Chemicals are being sprayed to neutralise the gas and prevent its further spread.

Officials said the situation is being closely monitored and measures have been intensified to bring the incident fully under control.
