Suryakanth, new CJ for SC

P.R. Gavai took office as the 52nd Chief Justice of India in May 2024. Although he is a deep devotee of Buddhism, he respects all religions. However, he has been at odds with the central government and has been embroiled in religious controversies.
Apart from this, he attracted attention by implementing reservation in Supreme Court posts in a short period of time. He also created a stir by giving a verdict in a case related to the powers of the Governor and the President, stating that time limits cannot be imposed on them and at the same time restricting the activities of the Governors. His term ended on November 22 and he left.
Let us appreciate his hard work.
Following this, Suryakanth was elected as the country’s new and 53rd Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. He took oath today (November 24) and will remain in office for about 16 months, till February 9, 2027.
Chief Justice Surya Kant, a native of Haryana, came from a humble family background and rose to prominence in the legal profession. After completing his law studies, he started his career as an advocate in the Hisar District Court.
He subsequently served as an advocate in the Punjab and Haryana High Court in Chandigarh. He served as the Advocate General of the state of Haryana at a very young age (38). He was appointed as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2004. Later, he served as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in 2018. He was elevated to the Supreme Court in May 2019.
During his tenure as a Supreme Court judge, he has been a part of several important benches and delivered important judgments. His contribution is particularly notable in cases such as the abrogation of Article 370, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, the confirmation of the ‘One Rank, One Pension’ scheme for military personnel, and the formation of a probe committee into the Pegasus spy scandal.
President Draupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Modi and state chief ministers, among others, have congratulated the new Chief Justice. It is no exaggeration to say that Suryakanth’s appointment has ensured a new leadership for the Indian judiciary.
Let’s wish him success in his work!
