Opposition Leader Udhayanidhi Stalin on Thursday criticised the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) during the debate on the demands for grants for the Police Department, alleging that Tamil Nadu was moving in “reverse gear” under the new government.
The Chief Minister, Vijay, had presented the demands for grants for the Police Department and announced new measures. Participating in the subsequent debate, Udhayanidhi said the Chief Minister should answer questions raised by the Opposition without shifting the blame onto the previous government.
Referring to the policy note, Udhayanidhi said crime and caste-based killings had declined during the previous DMK regime. He also claimed that caste discrimination and crimes against women had declined compared with earlier years.
He alleged that the new government was either cancelling existing schemes or continuing them under new names. “Tamil Nadu was travelling in top gear under the DMK government, but under the TVK government, it is moving in reverse gear,” he said.
Udhayanidhi questioned the government over its election promises, including the assurance of six free LPG cylinders a year, saying the government had now reduced the commitment to three cylinders.
He also claimed that drug seizures had reached unprecedented levels during the DMK regime and urged the government to provide long-term leave to Muslim prisoners who had remained in jail for several years.
Udhayanidhi further alleged that there had been no day without a murder in Tamil Nadu and claimed that 10 honour killings had occurred under the TVK government.
