Teacher hacked to death; boyfriend arrested

A young teacher was murdered in broad daylight near Thanjavur on Wednesday, allegedly by her boyfriend after she refused to marry him.
Kavya (26), daughter of Punniamoorthy, hailed from Melakalavathi village near the Mariamman Temple, Thanjavur district.
She was employed as a temporary teacher at the Alangudi Government Primary School. Kavya had reportedly been in a long-term relationship with Ajith Kumar (29), son of Karunanidhi, belonging to the same community and the same village.
Police said Kavya’s family recently arranged her engagement to a relative based on her request.
However, she continued speaking to Ajith Kumar without informing him about the engagement. On Tuesday night around 8 p.m., during a phone call, Kavya showed Ajith Kumar photos and details of her engagement, which angered him.
On Wednesday morning, while Kavya was riding her two-wheeler to school, Ajith Kumar allegedly intercepted her near the Ramakrishna Math, located in Kothattai Colony, in the Mariamman Temple area.
After an argument, he reportedly pulled out a knife he had hidden and stabbed her to death. Kavya died on the spot.
The Ammapettai Police reached the scene, recovered the body, and sent it to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital for postmortem.
A case of murder has been registered, and Ajith Kumar has been arrested.
The investigation is being carried out under the supervision of the Papanasam Deputy Superintendent of Police.
