In a novel initiative, the Telangana government is set to offer the public a chance to experience life inside a prison for a day under a special programme.
The “Feel the Jail” initiative by the Telangana Prisons Department allows participants to spend 24 hours in a controlled prison environment by paying a fee, earlier fixed at around Rs. 500 per person.
The programme was first introduced at the historic Sangareddy Heritage Jail Museum in Medak district and is now being extended to the Chanchalguda Central Jail complex in Hyderabad.
Participants opting for the experience will be provided with prison uniforms, basic toiletries, steel plates and mugs, and will be served the same food as inmates. They will also be required to surrender their mobile phones and personal belongings to prison authorities during their stay.
Officials said the initiative aims to give people a realistic understanding of prison life and create awareness about the consequences of crime through a direct experience.
The launch of the facility at Chanchalguda, which was initially scheduled for April 28, has been postponed and is expected to open to the public shortly. Authorities indicated that the final ticket price may be revised.
