Three persons — Arumugainainar (27) of Melavakaikulam, Sudalaikannu (24) of Srivaikundam Canal, and Isakkipandi (23) of Alankulam in Tenkasi district have been detained under the Goondas
Act for their involvement in an attempted murder case registered on October 9 in the Pudukkottai police station limits of Thoothukudi district.
The accused were earlier arrested in connection with an attack involving dangerous weapons that left one person seriously
injured.
Following their repeated involvement in criminal cases, District Superintendent of Police Albert John recommended their detention under the Act. The order was issued by District Collector Ilam Bhagwat. Police said the three had formed a gang that carried out violent assaults, extortion, and threats, creating fear in the locality.
Their continued activities were deemed a threat to public order. Consequently, the authorities invoked preventive detention to maintain law and order in the region. Officials confirmed that all three accused were lodged in the Palayamkottai Central Prison.
With these arrests, the number of persons detained under the Goondas Act in Thoothukudi district this year has reached 119, reflecting the district police’s intensified crackdown on repeat offenders and criminal gangs.
