Three persons, including a woman, were killed and six others, including three children, were injured after a car crashed into the centre median on the Madurai-Kollam four-lane highway near Nathampatti, close to Srivilliputhur, on Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Bhoopathi (26), who was driving the car, Karthik (38) and Angala Eswari (30), who
succumbed to injuries at the hospital.
The victims, all residents of Melapalayam in Watrap, were returning home after offering prayers at a temple in Maruthangudi in Sivaganga district.
The occupants included Servai (49), his wife Veeralakshmi (45), their children Kavya (15), Dhanalakshmi (16) and Ashwin (10), along with Karthik, Angala Eswari and Lakshmi (38).
Police said the car lost control while crossing the Nathampatti flyover and rammed into the centre median.
Bhoopathi and Karthik died on the spot, while the injured were rescued and rushed by 108 ambulance to the Srivilliputhur Government Hospital.
Doctors declared Angala Eswari brought dead.
Servai and Veeralakshmi, who sustained serious injuries, were later shifted to the Virudhunagar Government Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Kavya, Dhanalakshmi and Ashwin are undergoing treatment at the Srivilliputhur Government Hospital, while Lakshmi has been admitted to a private hospital in Watrap.
Nathampatti Police have registered a case and are investigating the cause of the accident.
