Three school students drowned in a lake near Ranipet district on Wednesday, triggering shock and grief in the locality.
According to police sources, Parthiban (12), Nithis (14), and another boy, all private school students from Thiruvika Nagar near Ranipet, had gone to bathe in Maniyampattu Lake near Sipcot.
While bathing, one of the boys reportedly got trapped in a deep portion of the lake.
In an attempt to rescue him, the other two students entered the deeper area but also drowned.
Hearing their cries for help, local residents rushed to the spot, retrieved the boys from the water, and took them to a nearby private hospital. However, doctors declared them brought dead.
On receiving information, Sipcot police recovered the bodies and sent them to Walajapet Government Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.
A case has been registered and further investigation is under way.
The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the area.
