Tiruvannamalai District Collector Urges Public to Shun Plastic Use

A Manu Neethi Day camp aimed at addressing public grievances and ensuring the effective delivery of government welfare schemes was successfully conducted at Vasudevanpattu Panchayat in Chengam Taluk under the leadership of Tiruvannamalai District Collector K. Tharpagaraj, IAS. The event was presided over by Kalasapakkam MLA P. S. T. Saravanan and attended by officials from various government departments.

Addressing the gathering, Collector Tharpagaraj said that under the guidance of Hon’ble Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, several welfare programs such as “Ungaludan Stalin” (Stalin With You), “Nalam Kaakkum Stalin” (Stalin Protects Your Well-being), and “Ungalai Thedi Ungal Ooril” (Searching for You in Your Town) are being successfully implemented to directly reach people at the grassroots level.

He noted that 78 petitions were received during the day’s camp, of which 72 were accepted for immediate redressal. The Collector added that the success of such outreach programs has resulted in a reduction in the number of grievances filed at the District Collectorate, reflecting improved service delivery.

Issuing a monsoon preparedness advisory, the Collector urged residents living near water bodies to remain vigilant and ensure that children do not go near ponds, lakes, or canals during heavy rains. He said cleaning and desilting of ponds and canals are underway and requested the public to refrain from dumping waste into water bodies.

Highlighting the environmental hazards caused by plastic, Collector Tharpagaraj cautioned that plastic is a major threat to the environment as it pollutes soil, blocks drainage systems, depletes groundwater, and harms the food chain. He urged everyone to completely avoid the use of plastic products for the sake of future generations.

He also advised the public to maintain hygiene to prevent the spread of vector-borne diseases such as dengue by keeping their surroundings clean and ensuring there is no stagnant water.

During the event, welfare assistance and benefits were distributed to beneficiaries through various departments. Under the Revenue Department, house site pattas, family cards, and accident relief assistance were distributed. The Agriculture Department provided micro-irrigation kits, farm tools, pesticide sprayers, tarpaulins, coconut saplings, and urad seeds. The Social Welfare and Women’s Welfare Department distributed cheques under the Girl Child Protection Scheme, while the Department for the Welfare of the Disabled provided sewing machines and assistive devices.

The event was attended by District Revenue Officer R. Rampradeepan, Divisional Commissioner Tharajkumar, District Supply Officer Sathishkumar, and senior officials from multiple departments.
