DMK president M.K. Stalin said Periyar Arivulagam in Coimbatore, inaugurated by Chief Minister Vijay on October 16, was built during the previous DMK government.
He asserted that the real achievement lay in creating the institution rather than merely inaugurating it.
Announced in the 2024-25 State Budget, the project was built at a cost of around Rs. 300 crore on land belonging to Coimbatore Central Prison.
Spread across 1.98 lakh square feet, the facility has a ground floor and seven additional floors. It houses libraries, a science centre, an auditorium, competitive examination facilities, an incubation centre and a digital library. With 1.25 lakh books, it is expected to serve as a major knowledge hub for western Tamil Nadu.Stalin highlighted the DMK government’s initiatives to develop libraries, including the Anna Centenary Library in Chennai and the Kalaignar Centenary Library in Madurai.
He also cited proposed library projects in Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Salem and Cuddalore.Reacting to reports that the words “Naan Mudhalvan” had been covered on a computer table inside the facility, Stalin criticised the move and highlighted the scheme’s significance. He urged Coimbatore residents to visit Periyar Arivulagam, describing it as a landmark that would promote knowl
edge, rationalism and reading among future generations.
