Police arrested two persons in connection with a burglary at a college professor’s house in Mayiladuthurai, recovering 21 sovereigns of gold jewellery, silver articles, and a stolen motorcycle.
Manikandan, a professor residing in Saratha Nagar on Town Station Road, had locked his house on the 21st and gone out. When he returned the next day, he found the front door broken open. Unknown persons had entered the house, removed a locker containing gold and silver items kept in a room, and also stolen a motorcycle parked outside.
Acting on his complaint, the Mayiladuthurai police launched an investigation. On the instructions of District Superintendent of Police Stalin, and under the supervision of Deputy Superintendent of Police Balaji, Inspector Sivakumar, Special Sub-Inspector Narasimhabharathi, and a special team began searching for the culprits.
Police inquiries identified the suspects as Shanmugam alias Manikandan (42) of Sivan Nagar, Nallathukudi, Mayiladuthurai, and Sadasivam (49) of Periyar Nagar, Needamangalam in Tiruvarur district. Both were arrested.
Officials said the accused had moved the locker to a nearby location, broken it open, and taken away the gold jewellery. Police recovered 21 sovereigns of gold, the broken locker, and the stolen scooter.
District SP Stalin commended the special team for their swift action in solving the case.
