Two Rare ‘Kooral’ Fish caught off Pamban Coast sold for Rs 1.65 Lakh

Two rare species of kooral fish were caught in the net of a fisherman off the Pamban coast in Ramanathapuram district, fetching an impressive price of ₹1.65 lakh at auction.
More than 90 mechanized boats had set out for fishing from the Gulf of Mannar region in Pamban the day before yesterday.
Upon returning to shore yesterday, fishermen discovered that two rare fish, weighing 22 kg and 24 kg respectively, had been trapped in a net.
The combined 46-kg catch was sold at an auction for ₹1,65,600, fetching around ₹3,600 per kg.
According to Pamban fishermen, kooral fish are not used for consumption. Instead, their air bladder, a rubber tube-like sac found in the fish’s stomach, is highly valued for industrial and culinary uses.
“This air sac, known locally as neti, is used in the production of alcoholic beverages like beer and wine to improve taste and shelf life. It is also used in making jelly candies,” fishermen explained.
They added that in East Asian countries, these air bladders are used to prepare premium soups, making the kooral fish one of the most sought-after marine species in the international
market.
