Two college students were electrocuted while attempting to retrieve palm fronds near an electric line at Sirumangadu village near Sriperumbudur in Kanchipuram district on Thursday.
The deceased were identified as Tilliganesh, 17, and Dakshanamurthi, 17, both residents of Sirumangadu.
According to police sources, the students, along with friends, were plucking palm fronds from a tree located close to an electric pole when the fronds accidentally came into contact with a live transformer wire.
In an attempt to retrieve them, the students reportedly used an iron rod, which resulted in both being electrocuted.
They were thrown off on impact and sustained severe burn injuries.
On receiving information, 108 ambulance personnel rushed to the spot and shifted the victims to the Sriperumbudur Government Hospital.
However, doctors declared both brought dead.
The Sunguvarchatram police have registered a case, sent the bodies for post-mortem examination, and commenced an investigation into the incident.
The tragic deaths have left the local community in deep shock, with grieving family members and residents mourning the loss.
