Two-year-old girl strangled in Madurai

In a shocking incident, a two-year-old girl was brutally murdered by her mother and her third husband and the body was dumped in nearby forest bushes at Sorikampatti in Madurai district. The police have arrested both the accused.
The accused have been identified as Kannan (25) of Bhagavathipuram in Tenkasi district and Kalasurya (25) of Punalur in Kerala. Both were working at a poultry farm in Sorikampatti, where they became acquainted and got married about two months ago. Kalasurya already had a two-year-old daughter, Shivani, through her second marriage.
Police investigation revealed that Kannan repeatedly expressed displeasure over the presence of the child, calling her a burden. On the 5th of last month, when Kalasurya had gone to a nearby shop, Kannan allegedly strangled the child to death. On learning about the crime, Kalasurya, instead of reporting it, allegedly joined him in tying the body in a bundle and dumping it in forest bushes nearby.
Later, differences arose between the couple, following which Kalasurya returned to her mother Sandhya’s house in Kerala. When Sandhya questioned her about the whereabouts of the child and received no proper reply, she grew suspicious and filed a complaint with the Punalur police.
Based on the complaint, Kerala police coordinated with the Sekkanurani police in Madurai district and launched an investigation. Sensing trouble, Kannan surrendered before Karadikkal Village Administrative Officer Anbazhagan on Thursday. He was later handed over to the Sekkanurani police.
During interrogation, Kannan confessed to the murder and to disposing of the body. Kalasurya was also secured and arrested. Police later went to the forest area and, since more than a month had passed since the crime, only the skeletal remains of the child were recovered. The bones have been sent for forensic
examination.
Police said further investigation is under way. The horrifying incident has sent shockwaves through the region.
