Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin met former minister Anbil Mahesh at Puzhal Central Prison on Tuesday. Mahesh was arrested in connection with an alleged financial fraud case and remanded in judicial custody until November 6.
The case follows a complaint by an association of private schools alleging that more than Rs. 100 crore had been illegally collected by promising permanent recognition, DTCP and CMDA approvals, and other statutory clearances for over 1,000 private schools during the previous DMK regime.
Based on the complaint, the Chennai Central Crime Branch registered a case against former minister Anbil Mahesh and private schools association president P.T. Arasakumar, among others.
Mahesh had approached the Madras High Court seeking anticipatory bail to avoid arrest. His petition was dismissed on the morning of October 26.
Subsequently, police arrested him in the Aminjikarai area of Chennai and produced him before Special Court judge L.S. Sathyamoorthy, who handles cases investigated by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption. The court ordered that he be remanded in judicial custody until November 6, following which he was lodged at Puzhal Prison late on Monday night.
Udhayanidhi Stalin visited the prison on Tuesday and held discussions with Mahesh. Former minister Sekar Babu and other DMK functionaries accompanied him.
Earlier, Udhayanidhi Stalin had condemned Mahesh’s arrest, alleging that it was politically motivated and amounted to political vendetta.
