Gold bars weighing 6 kg and 140 grams, transported without valid documents, were seized at the Walayar check post in Coimbatore district on Wednesday and handed over to the Income Tax Department.
Police personnel conducting routine vehicle inspections at the Walayar check post stopped a bus travelling from Palakkad to Coimbatore for inspection. During the search, the gold bars were found in the possession of Nipin, aged 29. As he failed to produce proper documents for the consignment, the gold was confiscated. Further inquiry revealed that Nipin is employed at a textile shop in Ernakulam district of Kerala. Investigators also found that the gold bars had allegedly been handed over by the shop owner, Rahman, aged 42, to Suresh, a resident of the Ukkadam area in Coimbatore.
The seized gold has been formally handed over to the Income Tax Department for further action. Officials said a detailed investigation is under way to trace the source and intended destination of the gold and to determine possible tax
violations.
