Funeral for a plastic doll: Rs 50 Lakh insurance scam busted in UP

Authorities here were stunned after uncovering a bizarre attempt to cremate a plastic dummy in order to fraudulently claim insurance money.
Four men arrived at the Karmukteshwar Ganga Ghat claiming to perform a funeral. Instead of following traditional rituals, they rushed straight to the cremation area and attempted to begin the process immediately. Their suspicious behaviour alerted locals, who intervened and stopped the cremation.
When the cloth covering the “body” was removed, a plastic dummy was discovered. As the group tried to escape, locals caught two of them and handed them over to the police, while the other two fled.
Police interrogation revealed a shocking plot. Kamal Somani, a cloth shop worker from Kailashpuri in Delhi, had accumulated debts of over Rs 1 lakh. To escape repayment, he joined hands with his friend Ashish Kurala.
Using the Aadhaar and PAN details of his former employer, Anshul Kumar, Kamal took out a Rs 50 lakh life insurance policy in Anshul’s name and paid premiums for a year. He later procured a fake death certificate showing Anshul as deceased.
To make the fabricated death appear real, the group attempted to stage a fake funeral using the plastic doll. However, their plan collapsed when locals exposed the dummy.
When contacted, Anshul Kumar told police he was alive and unaware that a policy had been taken in his name.
Police have arrested Kamal Somani and Ashish Kurala, while a hunt is on for the two absconding accomplices.
