UP makes expiry date mandatory on eggs

The Uttar Pradesh government has mandated that all eggs sold in shops must carry clearly stamped manufacturing and expiry dates from April 1, in a move aimed at ensuring food safety and preventing the sale of stale eggs.
The order, issued under the guidance of the State Animal Husbandry and Food Safety departments, seeks to bring greater transparency in the egg trade. Officials said consumers will now be able to easily verify the freshness and safety of eggs before purchase.
The decision follows multiple complaints about old and improperly stored eggs being sold as fresh across the State. Authorities noted that eggs stored at room temperature of around 30 degrees Celsius remain safe only for about two weeks, while refrigerated storage between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius can extend their shelf life up to five weeks.
The government has warned of strict action against violators. Eggs without proper labelling will be seized and destroyed or marked unfit for consumption, and legal proceedings will be initiated against traders.
Officials also highlighted that limited cold storage facilities, mainly in cities like Agra and Jhansi, remain a challenge. Traders have been directed to comply with the new rule ahead of its implementation.
