UP Rehab Shock: Man Swallows 29 Spoons, 19 Toothbrushes

A shocking case has been reported from Uttar Pradesh, where doctors removed dozens of foreign objects from the stomach of a man undergoing treatment at a de-addiction centre.

The patient, identified as Sachin (35), a resident of Bulandshahr, had been admitted to a rehabilitation facility in the Ghaziabad–Hapur region by his family. Reports suggest that patients at the centre often complained of being given insufficient food. In anger, Sachin began swallowing unusual items such as spoons, toothbrushes, and even pens.

According to doctors, Sachin would secretly steal these items, break them into smaller pieces in the bathroom, swallow them, and drink water to manage the discomfort. Over time, this bizarre habit caused him severe abdominal pain.

He was later shifted to Devanandani Hospital, Hapur, where an X-ray and CT scan revealed a shocking collection of objects inside his stomach. In a marathon surgical procedure led by Dr. Shyam Kumar, the medical team removed 29 spoons, 19 toothbrushes, and 2 pens.

Doctors described the case as “rare and extremely dangerous,” adding that Sachin could have lost his life had treatment been delayed. The patient is now recovering under observation.

Meanwhile, the incident has raised serious questions about the conditions in some rehabilitation centres. Authorities are expected to review the functioning of the centre where Sachin was admitted.
