US based Walgreens signs MoU to establish first India GCC in Chennai

An MoU was signed in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Friday for setting up the first Global Capability Centre (GCC) in India by US-based Walgreens India Private Limited in Chennai.
According to an official release, the GCC will be established at the DLF Downtown Taramani campus located along the newly announced OMR GCC corridor. The centre is expected to create 250 high-value jobs in its first year, with plans for expansion in subsequent years.
The MoU was signed at the Secretariat during an event organised by the Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce Department in the presence of the Chief Minister.
Walgreens, headquartered in the US, is a leading global healthcare and pharmacy services company with operations spanning pharmacy services, healthcare and consumer health products.
The company has decided to establish its first GCC in India in Tamil Nadu.
The centre will focus on technology and business services and will be located in the DLF Downtown Taramani campus along the OMR GCC corridor.
The State government said the agreement would further strengthen its efforts to create high-value employment opportunities in the GCC sector and would add momentum to Tamil Nadu’s emergence as a global technology and business services hub.
During the event, the Chief Minister urged the company to provide employment opportunities to youngsters from Tier-II and Tier-III cities in Tamil Nadu.
Industries Minister S. Keerthana, Chief Secretary M. Saikumar, Additional Chief Secretary of the Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce Department S. Vijayakumar, Guidance Tamil Nadu Managing Director and CEO Deepak Jacob, Walgreens Global Capability Centre head Umapathi Viswanathan, Walgreens director Masood Ahmed and senior government officials participated in the event.
