In an unexpected turn after the tragic stampede at a public meeting of Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) founder and actor Vijay, one of the victim’s families has returned the Rs 20 lakh compensation offered by the party leader.
The stampede, which took place during a TVK public outreach event in Karur, claimed 41 lives and left several others injured, sending shockwaves across Tamil Nadu. Moved by the tragedy, Vijay had announced Rs 20 lakh ex gratia for the kin of each deceased victim and arranged for the amount to be directly deposited into their bank accounts. He also brought several affected families to Chennai, where he personally met and consoled them.
However, Sangavi, the wife of Ramesh from Kodangipatti, one of the victims of the Karur tragedy, has now returned the Rs 20 lakh assistance given by Vijay.
Speaking to reporters, Sangavi said, “My husband Ramesh died in the Karur stampede. I have returned the money because Vijay did not personally visit us to offer condolences. I don’t want money — I only wanted his comfort and words of sympathy.”
She also claimed that some TVK administrators had taken her relatives to Chennai without informing her, expressing disappointment over how the situation was handled.
The move has triggered a wave of public discussion, with supporters defending Vijay’s actions and others sympathizing with the grieving woman’s emotions.
