Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay presented the Nammalvar Awards for the year 2025-26 to three farmers who excelled in organic farming at the Secretariat in Chennai on Thursday.
The awards were presented to S. Nallasivam of Namakkal district, A. Subramanian of Pudukkottai district and Sadhana of Chengalpattu district. Each award carries a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakh and a medal.
The Nammalvar Awards are presented annually to honour farmers who excel in organic farming, encourage other farmers to adopt sustainable agricultural practices and recognise their contribution to promoting organic farming.
Nallasivam has been cultivating sorghum, sugarcane, mango, coconut and vegetables using organic inputs for more than four years. He has also been value-adding and selling organic farm produce and has created awareness and provided training to more than 2,000 farmers.
Subramanian has been practising organic farming for the past 10 years, cultivating various paddy varieties, groundnut, black pepper, coconut and walnut. He has also been involved in value addition and has created awareness among more than 675 farmers about organic farming and value addition.
Sadhana has been practising organic farming for the past 11 years, cultivating pearl millet, finger millet, black gram, groundnut, green gram, banana, coconut, mango, jackfruit and leafy vegetables. She has also been value-adding and selling millets and oilseeds and has provided awareness and training on organic farming to more than 472 farmers.
Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister R. Vinoth, Chief Secretary M. Saikumar, Agriculture Production Commissioner and Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department Secretary P. Shankar, and Agriculture Department Director K. V. Muralidharan were present at the event.
