The Tamil Nadu Government has assured the Southern Zone Bench of the National Green Tribunal that Vinayagar idols will not be immersed at Neelankarai and Pattinappakkam beaches from next year.
The assurance was given in a case filed by Hariharan seeking directions to prevent the immersion of Vinayagar idols in water bodies during the Vinayagar Chathurthi festival.
The Tribunal had earlier observed that idol immersion could not be permitted at the environmentally sensitive Neelankarai and Pattinappakkam beach areas.
