A 33-year-old woman was allegedly electrocuted to death by her husband following suspicion over her behaviour at Kattukollai village near Pallikonda in Vellore district, sending shockwaves through the area.
The deceased was identified as Kalaiyarasi, wife of Karunakaran, 43, a resident of Kattukollai village.
The couple had been married for 14 years and have three sons.
Police said Karunakaran had been harbouring suspicions about his wife for some time, leading to frequent quarrels between them.
According to police, Kalaiyarasi had dinner and went to sleep on Tuesday night.
On Thursday morning, Karunakaran informed his parents that his wife had not woken up even after 7 a.m. and was lying motionless when he tried to wake her.
Alarmed by the situation, family members rushed to the house and found Kalaiyarasi dead.
Her sudden death raised suspicion among her parents, who subsequently lodged a complaint with the Pallikonda police, expressing doubts over the circumstances surrounding their daughter’s demise.
Acting on the complaint, police registered a case and took Karunakaran in for questioning.
During interrogation, Karunakaran reportedly confessed to the crime.
Police said he admitted that, driven by suspicion and unable to control his anger, he planned to kill his wife.
He allegedly electrocuted her during the night by attaching electric wires to her hands and legs while she was asleep, and later attempted to mislead family members by claiming she had died of illness.
Police arrested Karunakaran following his confession and further investigation is under way.
The incident has caused widespread shock and distress among residents of Kattukollai and nearby villages.
