A newly married woman was shot at allegedly by her former lover in Tarn Taran district of Punjab, triggering shock in the area. The accused is absconding and a search is under way.
Police said Ruby Mehra, a resident of Bedi Garden Colony in Tarn Taran Sahib district, had married Anush Kowar in December last year. Prior to her marriage, she was reportedly in a relationship with Karan, who lived in the same locality.
Investigations revealed that Karan had allegedly pressured Ruby to marry him, but she refused and ended the relationship. She later married Anush Kowar.
On Saturday around 5 p.m., Ruby and her husband were travelling on a scooter to a local market when Karan, who arrived on a motorcycle, intercepted them. An argument reportedly broke out between the trio.
During the altercation, Karan allegedly attempted to attack Anush. When Ruby intervened, he is said to have pulled out a concealed firearm and shot her. She sustained a grievous head injury and collapsed on the spot. The accused fled the scene immediately.
Locals rushed the injured woman to a nearby hospital, where she is undergoing treatment. A video of the incident has surfaced on social media.
Police have registered a case and launched a manhunt to trace and arrest the accused. Further investigation is under way.
