A 32-year-old woman died by suicide in Kerala, months after the death of her husband in Israel, in a case that has highlighted the emotional toll of prolonged grief and trauma.
Sukumaran, 38, a native of Kaliyadi in Wayanad district, had been working as a caregiver in Jerusalem after completing nursing studies. He was employed to look after an 80-year-old woman. In July last year, Sukumaran was found dead by hanging at the residence where he was working. The elderly woman under his care also died under mysterious circumstances.
Sukumaran’s body was repatriated to Kerala last week and was laid to rest on Wednesday. His wife Reshma, who was deeply affected by the incident, was undergoing psychiatric treatment following his death. The couple has a young child.
On Monday, Reshma reportedly attempted suicide in a state of severe emotional distress. Family members rescued her and admitted her to a nearby hospital, where she was placed under intensive care. Despite treatment, she died on Tuesday morning.
Police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.
