Youth detained after reckless driving sparks tension

A youth who allegedly drove his car recklessly through the Peelamedu area late on Monday night was caught by members of the public, assaulted and later handed over to the police, triggering tense moments in the locality.
According to police sources, the youth was driving at high speed and reportedly rammed into two-wheelers and roadside compound walls, causing panic among other motorists. Alarmed by his erratic driving, members of the public chased the vehicle, surrounded it and attacked the driver. During the commotion, the car’s window panes were smashed and the youth was forcibly pulled out of the vehicle. Eyewitnesses said the youth later climbed onto the car, created a scene and was seen smoking a cigarette, further provoking the crowd.
Police rushed to the spot after receiving information and brought the situation under control. The youth was taken into custody and shifted to a government hospital for medical examination to determine whether he was under the influence of alcohol or any other intoxicating substance.
The car involved in the incident was seized and taken to the Peelamedu police station. Police said the youth was speaking incoherently at the time of arrest and further action would be taken based on the medical report. The incident led to brief tension in the area before normalcy was restored.
